What is SBR Rubber? Definition, Types, Properties & Industrial Applications

Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) is the most widely used general-purpose synthetic rubber in the global rubber industry. It is copolymerized by styrene and butadiene monomers, featuring stable supply, cost-effectiveness, and balanced mechanical performance. Compared with natural rubber (NR), SBR shows better aging resistance, ozone resistance, and abrasion resistance, making it the ideal substitute for natural rubber in most industrial and tire scenarios.

According to polymerization technology and molecular characteristics, commercial SBR is mainly divided into three categories: Emulsion SBR (ESBR), Solution SBR (SSBR), and High-Styrene SBR (HSBR). Each grade has distinct structural advantages and targeted application scenarios, covering low-cost general rubber goods, standard tires, high-performance green tires, and rigid modified rubber compounds.

ESBR dominates the general rubber market with mature production processes and stable quality, including non-oil-extended and oil-extended grades. SSBR, especially functionalized SSBR, focuses on high-end tire markets with low rolling resistance and high wet grip performance. HSBR serves as a professional blending reinforcing agent for hard rubber products.

Nowadays, SBR rubber is widely applied in tire tread & sidewall, footwear soles & heels, conveyor belts, hoses, cable insulation, and architectural waterproof materials. With the upgrading of global rubber environmental standards, TDAE oil-extended ESBR and functionalized SSBR have gradually become the mainstream export grades.
